Home Automation Implementation Plan
Goal
Implement three useful home automations with the least friction: 1. Weekday Morning Dining 2. Dinner Mode 3. Friday Movie Night
Strategy
Use native systems first.
Priority order: 1. Apple Home / HomeKit for light scenes + schedules 2. Sonos for playback target and room control 3. Apple Music for content source
If native setup cannot handle the audio + light timing cleanly, use a second-layer automation system later. But do not assume that upfront.
Automation 1 — Weekday Morning Dining
Requirements
- Monday–Friday only
- 7:00am → Beatles’ Greatest Hits in Dining Room
- 7:36am → Kitchen light flashes
Implementation approach
Part A — music
Likely path: - create or verify access to Beatles’ Greatest Hits in Apple Music - route playback to Dining Room via Sonos or AirPlay endpoint - schedule playback for weekdays at 7:00am
Part B — visual cue
Likely path: - create a light scene or automation for kitchen flash - trigger at 7:36am Monday–Friday - flash should be brief (2–3 pulses)
Risks / unknowns
- Apple Home may not natively schedule Apple Music playback in the exact desired way
- Sonos + Apple Music integration may be easier from Sonos app than from Apple Home
- kitchen light may be a group rather than a single light
Recommendation
Treat Morning Dining as two linked routines if necessary: 1. music routine 2. kitchen flash routine
That is better than forcing one brittle monolith.
Automation 2 — Dinner Mode
Requirements
- Manual trigger only
- all connected lights off except kitchen + dining room
- play fun Apple Music dinner playlist in Dining Room only
Implementation approach
Part A — lighting scene
Create a Home scene: - Kitchen: on - Dining Room: on - everything else connected: off
Part B — music trigger
Use Sonos favorite / Apple Music playlist routed to Dining Room
Best UX
One tap / one button if ecosystem allows. If not, acceptable fallback: - one tap for lights - one tap for dining playlist
Recommendation
Name scene clearly: Dinner Mode
Automation 3 — Friday Movie Night
Requirements
- Manual trigger only
- all connected lights off
- stars remain separate and manual
Implementation approach
Create a Home scene: - all connected lights off - no attempt to include stars
Recommendation
Keep this intentionally dumb and reliable.
Implementation Sequence
Step 1
Verify room/device naming consistency: - Kitchen light / Kitchen lights - Dining Room audio target - Dining Room light(s)
Step 2
Create Home scenes: - Dinner Mode - Movie Night - optional Shoes On flash helper scene
Step 3
Create music routing: - Beatles Greatest Hits → Dining Room - Dinner playlist → Dining Room
Step 4
Create scheduled weekday routines: - 7:00 Beatles - 7:36 kitchen flash
Step 5
Test for one week before expanding
Success Criteria
Morning Dining succeeds if:
- music reliably starts on weekdays at 7:00
- kitchen flash happens at 7:36
- no accidental weekend firing
Dinner Mode succeeds if:
- one intentional trigger transforms dinner atmosphere quickly
- no surprise behavior
Movie Night succeeds if:
- one trigger darkens the connected house lights reliably
- stars remain unaffected
What I Can Prepare vs What May Need Manual Setup
I can do now
- architecture
- scene definitions
- implementation plan
- naming
- expansion strategy
likely manual UI steps may still be required
- creating Apple Home scenes
- selecting exact Apple Music item if search is ambiguous
- Sonos favorite / room target setup
- final room-device confirmation
Recommendation
Implement in this order: 1. Dinner Mode 2. Movie Night 3. Weekday Morning Dining
Why: - Dinner and Movie Night are manual scenes → easiest wins - Morning routine has the most moving parts → do it after the scene basics are stable
